Jon'el Doriocourt is a native Hawaiian who never dreamed she'd end up in Nebraska. Since moving to Nebraska, Jon'el takes refuge in her art while hoping for a reason to return to Hawaii. Ten years later she says her tan has faded, she wears shoes in the house, and she continues producing fun and funky art pieces. She loves glasswork and mosaics and has incorporated the two into this delightful koi fish tabletop.

Steps:

Note: Please number each step and do not skip any steps.

1. Place the tabletop on a piece of paper and draw around the outside. Sketch the design within the outline with a pencil. Trace over the design with a black permanent marker (figure A). Cut around the outside (figure B).

2. Transfer the design to the tabletop surface by placing carbon paper between the paper design and the tabletop using a pencil. Trace over the design with black permanent marker (figure C).

3. Select colored glass for your koi fish tabletop. Colors used were white, red and orange.

4. Place the paper pattern on a light box. Place the glass over the pattern and draw around the pattern pieces with a black permanent marker. Number each piece of glass (figure D).

5. Cut the glass shapes for the koi fish with a glasscutter and glass breaking pliers.

6. Grind the edges of the glass to fit the pattern.

7. Using white glue, adhere the glass to the tabletop surface following the pattern (figure E).

8. Nip glass and tiles for the rest of the design from iridescent glass and colored tile.

9. Fill in the remainder of the mosaic by adhering the glass and tile to the surface (figure F).

10. Glue river rocks around the edges of the surface (figure G).

11. Allow the glue to dry for approximately 24 hours.

12. Mix grout according to manufacturer's directions and mix in copper colored glitter to the grout. Apply grout over the mosaic surface, being sure to fill in between the glass pieces (figure H). Use a damp cloth to remove excess grout. Let dry.

13. Polish the mosaic tabletop with a cloth.
