Figure A
Guest Pat Desantis demonstrates how to make a beautiful Christmas House out of bias tape and foam board. In fact, an entire Christmas Village can be constructed by starting with a basic design and adding different variations in color to each house. The houses feature a removable roof option that allows them to be converted into cute storage boxes or terrific napkin, plant or cardholders.

15" x 15" piece of foam board, poster board or cardboard
double-stick tape or double-sided Peel 'N' Stick adhesive sheets
miscellaneous greens
glue gun with glue

Steps

Constructing the House

  1. Enlarge pattern according to dimensions provided (figure A). Cut out and trace pattern onto board (foam, poster, etc.). Cut board along traced pattern lines.
  2. Line up and glue front, back, two sides, and bottom together.
  3. Option A: If using double-sided adhesive sheets, trace pattern and cut all parts except the bottom. Remove one sheet of paper and apply to house. Then, remove top sheet a little at a time as you go.
  4. Option B: If using tape, apply one row at a time as you work.
House Exterior
  1. Starting at the back corner, at the bottom, begin taping the red bias tape one row at a time, overlapping each row as you go.
  2. To create the peaks on the front and the back, cut each row separately and glue to hold. Don't worry about the ends. They will be covered.
  3. Cover all edges and corners with bias tape, folding over to cover the raw edge of the board.
  4. Using the green cord, cover the front and back edges from the bottom over the peak, to the opposite bottom.
  5. Trace and cut door and window patterns out of black felt.
  6. To represent panes in the windows, glue white middy braid onto the black felt.
  7. To represent shutters, glue pieces of bias tape onto the black felt.
  8. For the door, again use pieces of bias tape for the panels. Glue in place around the house.
Constructing the Removable Roof (figure B)
  1. Trace pattern and cut from board.
  2. Score the roof in the center for the "peak." Fold on the score.
  3. With pinking shears, cut several inch-long pieces from the taupe bias tape.
  4. Apply double-stick tape or sheet to the roof.
  5. Place and glue one row of small pieces just over the edge, and start gluing and overlapping pieces one at a time, working in one direction to the peak. Turn and repeat the same for the other side. (Glue one piece of bias tape lengthwise over the edges at the peak.)
  6. Trim the entire edge of the roof with the striped cord.
  7. Cover small triangular supports with pieces of red bias tape. Glue to peak in roof. (This forms an angle.)
  8. Place over peaks of house. Decorate with flowers, appliques and greens.
